ENTRY / EXIT REQUIREMENTS FOR U.S. CITIZENS.
You need a valid passport to enter Ukraine.
U.S. citizens do not need to have a Ukrainian visa for stays less than 90 days within a 180-day period.
US citizens need a visa for all stays longer than 90 days.
As of September 10, 2011, US citizens who plan to stay in Ukraine for more than 90 days are subject to new visa and residency permit rules.
If you entered Ukraine on a visa issued prior to September 10th, you can stay in the country for as long as your registration remains valid. In this case you will be able to extend your stay without leaving Ukraine under exceptional circumstances. For more information on this matter please contact your local office of the Ukraine State Department of Migration (previously known as VGIFRO, but referred to almost universally by its old acronym, “OVIR”).
If you have a pre-September 10 visa and leave Ukraine for any reason, you will have to get a new visa before you can return, even if your registration is still valid. Ukrainian residency permit holders can continue to enter and exit the country with their passport and the valid residency permit; no new visa is required.
If you enter Ukraine without needing a visa (meaning you will be in Ukraine for fewer than 90 days within a 180-day period), you are automatically registered at the border for 90 days.  If you enter Ukraine without a visa no extensions of stay beyond 90 days can be authorized.
If you enter Ukraine on a long-term (“D”) visa, you must apply with OVIR for a residency permit at your earliest convenience. Remember that long-term (“D”) issued for single entry for 45 days stay. Once you have the residency permit you can reside in Ukraine for as long as it remains valid. To enter and exit the country, you will need your un-expired residency permit and a valid passport.
For more details regarding registration procedures, please contact the nearest OVIR office within Ukraine.
